Application in medicine:
Pharmacology
In the body, vitamin E functions as an antioxidant. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (components of cellular membranes) and other oxygen-sensitive compounds, such as vitamins A and C, are protected against oxidation by vitamin E. Vitamin E insufficiency can induce irritability, edema, thrombosis, and hemolytic anemia in preterm newborns. Adults and children with low serum tocopherol concentrations have been found to have creatinuria, ceroid deposition, muscular weakness, reduced erythrocyte survival, or enhanced in vitro hemolysis by oxidizing agents.
Dosage & Administration
Interaction
Vitamin E may decrease vitamin A absorption and function, as well as increase the impact of warfarin.
Side Effects
Overdosage (>1 gm) has been linked to mild adverse effects such as hypertension, tiredness, diarrhea, and myopathy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
When taken in the appropriate dosage, vitamin E is safe to take throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Higher dosages have yet to be established.
Precautions & Warnings
In some people, such as those using estrogen, it may increase the risk of thrombosis.
Storage Conditions
Keep away from light and heat in a dry area. Keep out of children's reach.
